Johannesburg, 31st October; they are back on the map and popular as ever. The excitement builds up as this weekend, the Mobil1 V8 Supercars head into their final round of the season at Zwartkops Raceway.
Five race weekends are under the belt and after 10 heats, the season is coming to end on Saturday on home ground at the 2.4km track. There have been no less than 5 different winners so far, and nine different drivers have climbed the podium.
The title for reigning champion, Mackie Adlem, is just a formality. Mackie will keep his number 1 plate for next year, mainly due to his consistent racing. Mackie completed every race on the podium, with the exception of one, and ultimately that’s what it’s about. Franco di Matteo has won the most races with 4, but stands third in the championship behind Terry Wilford – who was on the podium for 50% of the his races.
What to expect for the weekend: Firstly, we can guarantee it will be an exciting race weekend. In the four races that were held thus far this Mobil1 V8 Supercar season, we’ve had four different winners. Above all, the top 10 contenders of the championship can finish on a high note in the standings. Two good results can mean a top-5 finish for that group of drivers.
Next up, let’s not forget the Triple Crown, which has yet to be decided. After two rounds it’s Franco di Matteo who leads the way with 4 points over Adlem. Franco has made his intentions clear that the Triple Crown will go his way, however Adlem will not be a walk-over.
17 V8’s have entered the final round and it will see the debut of Warren Lombard, who has taken the car over from Schalk Compaan. Schalk has decided to devote all his attention to his son Auke, towards his future in the V8’s.
There is plenty of track time for the Mobil1 V8 Supercars this weekend, with 4 practice sessions on Friday. On Saturday the day kicks off with qualifying at 09:40, and the first 10 lap race at 13:25. The final race of the year will be at 16:50 for 12 laps. Bear in mind, the last race will be with a reversed grid.
Live reports will start from Friday morning throughout the whole weekend. Make sure you make your way to Zwartkops raceway, take a few selfies with our drivers and stick around for a jam- packed weekend with plenty of other racing. Until then, remember – Everything else is only a game.
